I don’t know why it took me so long to share this recipe with all of you because this is one of my favorites. Salted Caramel Sauce. There’s just something about the combination of sweet and salty that makes me smile. If you’re the same way then this recipe is for you. It’s perfect for ice cream, brownies, cakes or any other sweet treat you want to enjoy it on. Come to think of it, I just bought some donut pans. I might have to make some Salted Caramel Donuts!
This is a simple four ingredient recipe. You just need granulated sugar, heavy cream, butter and sea salt. That’s it, super simple. You’ll find an easy to follow recipe at the end of this post with all the measurements.
First heat the sugar over medium heat. Just keep stirring it to prevent burning. Once it starts to melt it will sort of clump up as the melted sugar mixes with the unmelted sugar and it will start to have a light yellow brown color. Keep stirring!
Finally the sugar will melt down completely into a beautiful caramel color.
Time to add the butter, oh, and keep stirring! You’ll stir until the butter is completely melted. When you add the butter it will boil up a bit, this is normal, just keep stirring. Yes it’s that important, that’s why I keep reminding you.
When the butter is melted slowly, very slowly, pour in the cream. Remember how the mixture boiled up when you added the butter? It will boil up and splatter even worse with the cream so you want to add it slowly to avoid a mess and/or injury. Then, yes, keep stirring.
Keep stirring for about a minute then remove from heat and stir in the sea salt. Isn’t that creamy caramel color beautiful.
Let it cool off and you’re done!
This caramel will start to firm up as it cools so make sure you transfer it to the container you want it in, and make sure it’s a container you can heat up a bit when you’re ready to soften it some. It won’t become rock hard, but you will need to heat it to make it a sauce again. I put it in a mason jar, then just place the jar in some simmering water for a bit.
Ingredients
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 6 tbsp butter, cut in cubes
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp sea salt
Instructions
- Heat the sugar in a sauce pan over medium heat stirring constantly until it melts into a caramel colored liquid.

Can I just drink that whole mason jar? Caramel sauce is my favorite!

I hope you like it! My only problem with it is it does harden a bit so you have to melt it down in hot water to get it back to a drizzling consistency. This is also why I recommend putting it in a mason jar.
