The Astonishing Effects of Art Journaling for Just One Week

This week I’ve been working through an Art Journaling workshop on CreativeBug and the results have been astonishing. Seriously.

First of all. I managed to step away from my computer for a few hours to create with my hands. That’s an amazing feat, and CreativeBug managed to get me to accomplish it. I applaud you staff at CreativeBug. Standing ovation well deserved.

Seriously though, picking up some new art supplies and exercising some creative muscles I haven’t done in a while has been fantastic for me. In my journey for a positive life, it wouldn’t be fair to keep this little week long journey from you. A journey that I’m going to be doing more of, because this was just the first week in the workshop and I have a lot more to do!

Here are some of the highlights of my work. Please note, one thing I learned this week from the workshop is that I won’t like all of my work, in fact some of it might be just plain painful to look at. Sorry about that. Remember, I have never considered myself an artist of the illustration type, and it’s been quite some time since I’ve practiced. Some of these will be scary.

I started off with just some random doodles to get my art journal motor running. Gotta start somewhere.

Art Journaling Start SomewhereI did the next lesson even though it pained me. Drawing faces is not my cup of tea. However I give myself points for effort, just none for quality. Ouch. I may take a different approach to faces if I try this one again. Please laugh with me, not at me on this one!

Beauty is in the Eye of the BeholderI quickly moved away from this concept and did some more exploring on my own. One prompt I didn’t do this week was the photograph prompt, but I plan on getting to that one at a later date. I still need to get a proper adhesive, and find a photo I want to use. I may be a bit too picky, but I think I can find something from my old stash of duplicates.

Anyway, back to what I actually did accomplish, and I did some thinking. I love color. Bright bold color. Rainbows it is. And lots of them. I’m still working on this page, and I have a feeling it will be awhile before I finish. I really do like the practice of just drawing lines and coloring them in. I can’t wait to see this when it’s done.Art Journaling RainbowsAlong with color I’ve always said I love flowers. So, I took off on flowers as well. Again another project that is unfinished, however I did dabble in some mixed media, sort of. My colored pen set doesn’t have purples, and that’s what I needed, so I added in some colored pencils. Not too bad. Also, that little orange flower is no where near finished, and I don’t just mean the color. I’ll be adding on to the size as I go, but it’s so small and detailed it was hurting my hand and I had to take a break.

Art Journaling FlowersAfter this week of playing in my art journal, I did make some astonishing discoveries. Ok, astonishing to me and interestingly enough, things I already knew but hadn’t applied to my positive life, even though I should have. These are in addition to getting me off my computer, because that really is amazing. Really, it is. I’m a little too connected for my own good.

  1. My mood went up.
  2. My stress went down.
  3. I found myself looking forward to creating some me time.
  4. I found it easier to communicate with my family that I needed some time on my own.
  5. I rediscovered some of my old loves.
  6. I discovered some new loves.
  7. I reminded myself that hands on learning is something I need (and want).
  8. My children were inspired by my work.
  9. I was inspired to add my emotions to the journal in a new way (I won’t be sharing some of these pages. Sometimes a journal is just for the creator).
  10. When you start creating randomly, new ideas appear out of no where.

These are just some of the things I’ve learned with my art journal and I can’t wait to learn more. I forgot how important it was for me to branch out and discover new creative outlets. I’ll share more of what I learn as I learn it.

Do you want to get in on this art journaling workshop with me? CreativeBug has this class and more! Get creative!

What astonishing effects have you discovered from a hobby, new or old. Share with us in the comments.
