Scarves have been popping up on trees in the winter all over the United States over the past few years and it’s no surprise that scarves finally hit downtown Omaha courtesy of the Secret Kindness Agents. I’m honored to say I was a part of it all. One hundred and fifty people agreed to join in the event and after just an hour at the park it was obvious they were there.
The idea behind this project is to tie scarves, hats and gloves to trees for anyone who is cold and needs them. We put the winter wear up, then attached a note saying, “I’m not lost! If you are out stuck in the cold, please take this to stay warm.” It was signed by the Secret Kindness Agents.
We arrived early and met up with Ferial, the organizer of the event and founder of The Secret Kindness Agents and her family. Shortly after that our mutual friend Becky showed up with her son, Agent Ignored Cactus. I asked the girls if they wanted to create secret agent names too for their first mission, but they opted not to. My theory is that they want to think about it and find the perfect secret agent name.
After a bit we headed up to another part of the park because we heard there was a bigger group of people gathering. I’m going to tell you right now, they were organized! They had a table set up with an entire assembly line of scarf prep, snacks and hot drinks.
We helped them put tags on scarves and hang them up along the street. As I worked down the sidewalk I noticed a lot of scarves hung up. It was obvious the Secret Kindness Agents were good at being secret. There were a ton of scarves, hats and gloves scattered among the posts, trees and benches, yet I didn’t see many people putting them up. Ninjas, I tell ya!
When we arrived a camera crew was there and they followed us around and interviewed Ferial about the project. As the event progressed they were found throughout the park interviewing different volunteers.
It was an amazing experience and it was fun catching up with friends and meeting new people; however, the best part of the event was knowing we were doing something to help keep people warm during the coldest part of the winter around here. Nebraska winters can be brutal.
This was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait until next year to do this again. I also can’t wait to see what other events The Secret Kindness Agents are going to put on for us to join in on!
