In 2004 my husband, then fiance, and I took the leap into homeownership. We didn’t just buy a house, we had a house built for us. Watching the house go up over the months was exciting for us, especially since we were still young, mid twenties. It was a huge step for both of us in our lives.
The number of times we drove by to check on the progress, or picked up keys from the builders to see how the interior was coming is countless.
We were watching a dream of ours come true. Growing up in the house my dad built years before I was even thought of has been a proud memory for me, but then to build my own house, though not with my own two hands like my dad did, was still an accomplishment for me.
My dad died when I was ten, so to this day I still cherish the memories I have of him, and do my best to make as many connections to him as possible. Homeownership is one of those connections, and it makes me smile even to this day when I think about it.
Moving into our new home in 2005 was a big moment. We were in charge, we could do what we wanted, and we didn’t have neighbors sharing a wall and the sounds of everyday living.
Now, thirteen years later, we’re still in the same house, but our family has grown. We have two beautiful girls, two cats, a dog, a guinea pig, and a couple of fish aquariums.
Our girls are learning everyday the importance of taking care of our home and protecting it. Even though this house is still young, it has a lot of memories, significance, and security to us. They have their daily chores to help in the upkeep and we teach them about other ways we protect our home and family.
The girls have had plenty of questions about insurance over the years, but they are still a bit too young to fully grasp the concept. I’m happy to know that even though they don’t understand it completely, they are still protected in a variety of ways.
My family has a lot of dreams. Some we’ve realized, such as home ownership, home business, having kids, and homeschooling. Others we are still working at, such as having a secure financial future, career and education aspirations for the kids, and big plans for travel. The kids are currently saving up money for a vacation to Germany!
