It’s true Nebraska weather around here. End of December, we had snow on the ground, almost zero degree weather, and the past couple of days have been 50’s and 60’s.
I say, no matter what the temperature, when December and January are on their annual visit it’s the season for hot chocolate. Earlier this year I introduced you to my peppermint hot chocolate recipe, so now I want to tell you about a different way to spruce up your hot cocoa.
Hot chocolate stir spoons!
I love these because they are something fun and festive to put out for guests who are visiting or at a holiday party. They are also a great gift for the neighbors when the candy trays are making the rounds. I know my neighbors loved that we did something a little different with a small jelly jar filled with hot chocolate mix and a few hot chocolate stir spoons.
Here’s what we did.
What you’ll need:
- Plastic spoons
- Wax paper
- Bag of chocolate chips
- Bag of white chocolate chips
- Variety of candy melts (optional and color theme them for the occasion if you want)
- Crushed candy cane (optional)
- Red hots (optional)
- Any other small candy that will melt and taste good in hot chocolate.
Lay out a sheet of wax paper and pull out a handful of spoons. Pour about a cup of chocolate chips (more or less depending on how many spoons you’re making) into a bowl and melt them in the microwave. I microwave them at 50% power for a minute, stir, then continue melting at 30 second intervals at 50% power stirring in between each heating until they are completely melted. Do the same for the white chocolate chips.
Once melted start dipping the bowls of the spoons into the melted chocolate, making sure to cover both the front and back of the spoon.
Before the chocolate is dried on the spoon, decorate with flavored chocolate chips, chopped candy melts, crushed peppermints, red hots or anything else you want to decorate with. You can also use the white chocolate to drizzle a design over the regular chocolate, or vice versa.
Allow time for the spoons to dry, then they are ready to use!
You can decorate them with ribbons for a pretty display or just heat up some hot chocolate and use them right away!
Don’t forget, once the chocolate on the stir spoon is melted, go back and top your hot chocolate with whipped cream and/or marshmallows.
It’s the perfect accompaniment to this chilly season.
What’s your favorite flavor to add to hot chocolate? Tell me in the comments.
Love your recipes and craft ideas I’ve made a lot of them and given them as gifts for Christmas
I’m glad you’re enjoying them! We had a lot of fun making them. I’m always happy to hear other people are getting some use out of them as well. Thanks for commenting!
