The other day I posted about Charlie’s pizza challenge which I’ve confidently accepted. Pizza is a family favorite, which is why this challenge was created. In that challenge she said we can make anything into pizza. This got me thinking, why not do something fun with pizza for the Big Game. Pizza is a game day staple after all.
With a little brainstorming, Game Day Pepperoni Pizza Kabobs were born.
We all agreed this was a fantastic idea, so we headed out to Walmart to pick up our supplies. DiGiorno® Pepperoni STUFFED CRUST® Pizza was a must have for this recipe. Cheese stuffed crust, real mozzarella and vine-ripened tomatoes! Everyone loves stuffed crust around here, the ingredients give it a wonderful flavor, and pepperoni is one of the family favorites. Plus it’s currently on rollback at Walmart, that’s a score for me!
As soon as we got home I put the pizza in the oven. The kids were happy. Did I mention they love pizza? Did I mention I love pizza?
While the pizza was baking I gathered my ingredients. We went with pepperoni, green pepper, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil, and black olives to go with the DiGiorno® pizza. There were other ingredients we could have used too, such as red onion or mushrooms. These are your pizza kabobs. Get creative!
When the pizza came out of the oven I sliced it into squares instead of the usual triangle slices.
Time to assemble the pizza Kabobs. Depending on the size you want them you could use large toothpicks that have your team colors on the ends of them, or go the route we did and use longer wooden Kabob skewers. These worked great because I wanted to maximize the additional items on each Kabob.
To keep things in place I found that starting and ending with the cheese was perfect to hold everything in place without sliding. Then in the middle I just mixed and matched the rest of the kabob components.
I love this idea of pizza kabobs because you can do so much with it. You can build them in advance or leave them out as a build your own kabob buffet. Let the kids construct them for something fun to do while the game is on, or even challenge guests to build their own pizza kabob in honor of their favorite team. Obviously getting some fun, creative ingredients to represent those teams would be fun, or asking guests to bring an addition that represents their team!
One more fun thing we added was a marinara dipping sauce. We cheated, it was sauce from a jar, but that’s okay, the real VIP of this game is the pizza kabobs. My favorite part of this entire trial run of the recipe was watching Charlie attempt to dip the kabob into the dipping sauce.
Note: If you like to eat your kabobs directly off of the stick, dipping may be difficult for you. If you like to pull off each item and eat them one by one, then dipping will be a lot easier. If you have any tips for dipping kabobs into sauce, please share them in the comments, we’d love to hear them and implement them at our Game Day party!
