Ok, so I’ll admit it. September 2nd was The Sims 4 launch, and I was one of the first in line at Walmart to pick up my copy of it.
Look how excited I am! I was thrilled I didn’t have to have a staff member unlock the video game cabinets because I probably would have kissed them and gotten myself kicked out of the store. I will not confirm or deny if that has happened in the past (it hasn’t…but I’ve come close!)
In case you’re not quite sure where to find The Sims™ 4 at Walmart, let me give you a clearer picture. I want to make sure everyone knows exactly where to find this game because everyone needs to play it! The game is extremely versatile and there are so many things to do within the game if you get a little imaginative. It’s a great way to get the creative juices flowing, especially if you work in a creative field like I do. Anyway, here it is, right under the great big sign that says PC games.
If you’ve never played any of The Sims Series I’ll just do my best to believe you’ve lived a sheltered life and have finally come to your senses and are discovering the awesomeness of The Sims for the first time. If you are, in fact, discovering The Sims for the first time, I’d like to take a moment to give you a few ideas on how to really give your game purpose because there is so much going on, it can get overwhelming, and sometimes a little direction can help.
1. Create Yourself.
This may be a fairly obvious idea for game play in The Sims Series, however not everyone has thought of it, or thought about how to fully take advantage of this idea. Find a picture of yourself and do your best to make your Sim look as much like you as possible. In The Sims 4 the Sim creation tool is so advanced you can do some amazing things with it! Below you’ll see a side by side of what I created. Also, don’t forget to give yourself a personality. It’s up to you if you want to make your Sim act just like you in the real world, or maybe give them a totally different personality to see how you might act. Have fun with it and and see what kind of life you can give yourself in your new virtual world!
If you’re creating yourself, be sure to enter the SIMify yourself Facebook Contest. There are $8000 in prizes to be won including the grand prize where you could win a trip to Maxis studio in California! Here are the official rules. By the way, it’s NO PURCHASE NECESSARY! Oh yeah, free to enter, you’ve got nothing to lose!
2. Use Your Sims as Writing Inspiration.
That’s right, you’re creating a unique story in your Sim world, you might as well tell it. Create a neighborhood and then you can follow the lives of one family, interpreting their actions and translating them to story form. Or, follow multiple families and tell how their seemingly unconnected lives are actually extremely connected. Give your Sims BIG personalities and watch how they interact. The bigger the personality, the bigger the reactions and mood swings, the better the fodder for a story or even a weekly blog post story.
I might even consider writing a post a week telling the story of my Sims! I’ll have to think about that one. I mean, look what I have going on already! My Sim married a man after knowing him for less than a week and got pregnant with his baby before he even moved in! Then to top it all off, she’s letting another guy touch her belly! The nerve of that Sim! I hope her husband doesn’t catch them, he might get a little jealous.3. Take on the Legacy Challenge.
If you frequent the forums for The Sims like I do, you may be aware of a little something called the Legacy Challenge. This challenge requires you to play the game, with no cheats, and achieve ten generations! That is a lot of Sims play. I have yet to achieve this lofty goal, which is hard for me to admit for as much as I love the game, but I have to be honest. Now that I own The Sims 4, I might have to put a little time into trying to get my 10 families.
4. Push Your Sims to the Extremes
Another fun thing we’ve always liked to do, ever since The Sims Series started, is to push our Sims to the extreme. We might force them into being as successful as possible, paying no attention to anything except better their career and moving up the corporate ladder. We might give them an opposite fate and force them to live with nothing at all. If you’re a little morbid, you could see the fastest way to kill off your Sims. I know, that one’s not for everyone, but it can be done, and it can be entertaining. I haven’t had a Sim death in Sims 4, so I have yet to see some of the creative ways to die that I’ve found in past games, such as electrocution or house fire. The Grim Reaper even makes and appearance and you do have the option to plead for your life; or at least you did in the previous The Sims Series games. I personally love to explore every option the game has to offer. I’m still wondering if something bad will happen if I keep having my Sims stick their hands in random logs looking for frogs.
Finally, the last idea on my list, but not the last idea in the infinite world of The Sims, challenge yourself to only control one Sim in a Sim family. Let the other Sims mind their own business and do what they want. Take control of just one Sim and see what happens. Do you tend to make everyone mad or are you the one getting mad at your roommates or family? Do you all clean up, or are you the only one picking up the messy house. Is everyone happy, or are most Sims stomping around knocking trash cans over and picking fights. Now that the Sims have bigger personalities and are more sensitive to their surroundings, needs meter, and moods I’m kind of excited to try this one out with a larger Sim family. I can see a lot of hilarity ensuing.
Thank you again to the #Sims4 and #CollectiveBias for sponsoring this post. I had a lot of fun, and I know I’ll continue to have fun as my Sims stories progress!
