Dogs Are More: Love Makes You Family

Glory is more than just a pet, she’s family.

My husband, a self proclaimed dog lover, wanted a dog. We had a house of our own, the kids were a bit older, so I decided it was time. We adopted Glory and that was the beginning of our journey with a dog.

This year, Milk-Bone is celebrating it’s 20th Anniversary with Canine Assistants, a non-profit organization that trains and provides service dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities and special needs. This is the kind of training we were learning about this week.

Part of being a responsible dog owner is making sure your dog gets enough exercise. With Glory we’re on top of this task. We make sure to keep her busy throughout the day to help her work up a good appetite. I don’t think there’s an activity she doesn’t enjoy, unless it’s a game of frisbee. But, I told you all about that a few months back.

Today I’m sharing with you a variety of activities Glory does enjoy.

Writing my story with Glory

Adopting Glory and the years after getting to know each other has been a whirlwind of emotions. Everything from getting me used to owning a dog, something I hadn’t done since I was seven, to helping me forgive the destructive tendencies of a newly adopted, anxious, pet who we don’t have the history on and she can’t tell us. There have been a lot of great moments with her too, such as teaching her to play and discovering what games she loves. Tug. She loves tug. To seeing her communicate her preferences in comfy spots to sleep (always on my big comfy blankets on top of the kids bean bags. So much better than her own big expensive bed). And don’t forget the expressive nature of her eyebrows. She has truly shown us that yes, dogs have their own thoughts, interests and emotions. Glory is definitely a loved part of our family.

I love my cat. Anyone who really knows me, knows this to be true. He’s an extremely important part of my life and one of my best friends. He’s by my side pretty much the entire time I’m at home and we have our own snuggle routine at bedtime. He loves me so much he wants to be as close to me as possible, once even going so far as to lay on my face! Because he is so special to me, I want only the best for him. Lucky for his adopted sister, Bagheera, she gets in on the special love and quality products too.

This is Arthur, my lazy, snuggly, attitude driven feline. He’s loud, opinionated, and doesn’t take pestering from the dog. Well, at least not without giving her an earful. He’s my buddy and I wouldn’t want him any other way.

A Day in the Life of Glory

When we received our GoPro my husband had one question. “I wonder what our dog does all day?” I thought this was a great question. Sure, when I’m home I can keep an eye on her and report back, but we still had no idea what she does when we leave the house. So, we strapped on the GoPro and discovered she waits at the door for five to ten minutes, then lays down and naps until we get back.

That doesn’t make much of a story, but I thought I’d go ahead and document a day in our dog’s life from my perspective anyway. I was surprised to see, when I really started paying attention, that a day in her life is a lot like a day in my life.

How We Get This Dog to Smile

As we’ve gotten to know her, and she’s gotten to know us, we’ve learned a few things. Namely, how to make this dog smile. The main ingredient in getting her to smile is my husband. This dog loves her human. She will wait by the window when it’s just about time for him to come home from work. If he travels she mopes around the house until he returns, and she always, always, is beyond excited to greet him when he walks through the door.
