I have the gift of being a pantry chef. Okay, I’m not technically a chef if you’re going by official definitions, but I do have this amazing ability to look in my fridge, freezer and pantry, pull out a collection of ingredients and create a delicious, better for you meal. My husband loves that I have this ability, but he tells me sometimes I expect him to do the same thing, especially when I’m either sick or so busy I need him to take on dinner.

To help him out I’m creating a collection of “pantry” recipes he can use as a go to list. These recipes will all be created using ingredients that I normally have on hand, so he’ll be able to run through the list and find at least one recipe that will work.

The first recipe in our pantry recipe collection is One Dish Chicken and Orzo Salad.

Starring in this recipe are Tyson® Grilled & Ready®Chicken Breast Strips and Wish-bone® Italian Dressing. I love both of these ingredients because they are extremely versatile. With the Tyson Grilled & Ready Chicken Breast Strips I can make everything from fajitas to casseroles to salads. Wish-bone Italian Dressing is great as a marinade, in casseroles or to top salads. There are a ton of recipes I can create with both which is why I love to have them on hand.

One Dish Chicken and Orzo Salad

First gather up your ingredients. You’ll need one 22oz bag of Tyson Grilled & Ready Chicken Breast Strips, 1/2 to 1 cup of Wish-bone Italian Dressing, 1 green pepper, 1 red pepper, half a red onion, 2 stalks of celery, 1 cup of shredded cheese, and 1 1/2 cup dry orzo prepared by package directions.

You’ll want to chop or dice the peppers, celery, and onions, then combine them with the orzo.

For this recipe you’ll use the entire package. Once it’s prepared cut the strips into bite sized pieces, then mix into the orzo and veggies.

I started with 1/2 cup and it added a light flavor to the orzo salad, so I added another 1/4 cup. My husband prefers milder flavors so we left it there, though I would have enjoyed another 1/4 cup rounding the dressing out to a full cup. Go with your flavor preferences and add as much as you need to get the flavor you want.

It makes enough for eight or more servings, so it’s great for a potluck, to make when you want left overs, or to feed a big crowd. If you want to make less, just cut the recipe in half. It’s an extremely versatile dish using versatile ingredients. It’s easy to make it your own by swapping out ingredients based on what you have in the house, for example, maybe you have rice instead of orzo, or mushrooms and carrots instead of celery and peppers.

My husband is a chef and he is so good at pantry meals, but I’m terrible at them. I just don’t get the practice much since he cooks most of the time. Thank you for another great meal that I can add to our rotation! [client]

I attribute my success to pantry chef to all the cooking shows I’ve watched over the years, mostly on PBS! It’s one of those things I’ve grown to love doing. I hope you love this recipe as much as we do!

This recipe is great for picky eaters because you can easily make it your own! If you adapt it with any different ingredients, please let me know what you changed, it might be perfect for the picky eaters in my family, lol.

Looks nice but I’m not sure what orzo is! Have pinned and plan to adapt to ingredients available in the UK.

Awesome, thank you Linda! Orzo is a little oblong shaped pasta, a little bigger than a grain of rice. It makes for some great light dishes. Works in a lot of different recipes.

I like the recipe: although I would use fresh chicken rather than frozen.

Whatever works for you! That’s why I love versatile recipes like this. I use fresh chicken a lot of times too, but sometimes I’m in a hurry and need something fast so the Tyson Grilled & Ready make it easy for me.
