I’ve been spending the first week of 2017 trying to focus on my new year’s theme, which is less is more.
Having a huge ‘what I want to do list’ keeps me from actually doing something. The problem is I get overwhelmed and don’t know what to do first, then I don’t do anything.
Perfect place to implement less is more!
My hope is that by reducing my ‘what I want to do list’ I’ll be able to focus on learning at the least, one item on the list, hopefully all of them. Getting a start on all of them would be fantastic too.
I started by writing down a huge list of things I want to learn. By doing this I realized I need to get started learning things or I won’t have enough time in life to do it all.
With my huge list written, the only thing left to do was narrow it down. I decided on five items because it would give me plenty to learn with enough variety I can change things up when I need something different.
There were a couple of notable things about my list. First, many of the items were work related. As much as I want to learn everything there is to know about blogging, I have to pace myself if I want to master any of these skills. Because of that I picked two items related to photography, because that is a skill I want to improve.
Next, I realized fiber art, such as knitting and crochet, is a bigger interest of mine than I realized, so I picked a couple of items from that category too.
Finally, I’ve had an increased interest in drawing than I did in the past. There is something about the feel of a pen or marker in my hand. I’m not exceptional good at drawing, something I learned in a drawing 101 class in college, but I still enjoy it. Line drawing, zentangles and scrapbooking are things I’ve dabbled in over the years, so I decided on something that would work well to improve all of them.
That is how I built my list. It’s not a long list, but it is a list that will take me some time to complete. Still, everyone has to start somewhere, right?

I’m excited to get to work on this list. Now to pick what I’ll work on first!
