I hadn’t heard much about this flag, but what I learned was this flag was burned, torn and tattered and was hanging from the side of a building near the site of the 9/11 attacks. A restoration was done on the flag, and flags from all 50 states were hand stitched by people from all around the country to repair it. The flag was finished with the inclusion of the other flags and had been displayed. The inclusion of the flags was not the proper way to leave the flag in the end, so they did a follow up restoration to bring the flag back to it’s original look.
Every person in attendance at the Welcome Home Ceremony was invited to put a few stitches into the flag to help restore it. I am proud to say that I have a few stitches in the flag, as does my husband. I even called my mother and father in laws who were in town watching the kids to come up and put in a few stitches (my sister watched the kids for them so they could do this).
